In partnership with the GLOBE Program at UNH Leitzel Center and Squam Lakes Connected Learning Ecosystem
Join us onFriday, October 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center for a FREE hands-on professional development day focused on GLOBE environmental data collection protocols. Spend the day exploring local waters and forests while learning field-based data collection techniques you can bring directly back to your students. We’ll ground our work in real research questions to support meaningful, place-based learning.
The day will include two concurrent session options, described below.Please indicate your session preference when registering. A brief pre-workshop assignment is required. Details will be shared closer to the workshop.

Learn how to measure water temperature, pH, transparency, macroinvertebrates, and assess water health. These protocols complement the Earth Around Us Water Tent, a pop-up tent with striking murals designed by New Hampshire students and a local artist. The Water Tent can visit your school or program and comes with the materials needed for data collection.
Learn how to measure and classify the plant life in your area. Data collection protocols include canopy cover and ground cover, identifying dominant and co-dominant vegetation species, and measuring tree circumference and height. These measurements can be used to monitor changes in a forest over time and connect to NASA satellite measurements.
9:00–9:30: Settle in, network, and connect with fellow educators 9:30–12:00: GLOBE protocols training 12:00–12:30: Lunch (please bring a bag lunch) 12:30–2:30: Continue protocols training 2:30–3:00: Reflection, application, and help with next steps for implementing data collection in your local context
Please come prepared to spend a large portion of the day outside!
Professional Development certificates will be provided for all participants.
Squam Lakes Connected Learning Ecosystem members will receive a $50 stipend for attending.
